Many challenges present themselves when modeling physical climate risks within the financial sector. Such challenges can be addressed though analysis and research on stress-test methodologies, credit risk modeling, the design of new and innovative insurance products, how to use and improve simulation models, and the definition of modeling frameworks to assess systemic risk in the context of the financial sector.
The working group’s main goal is to carry out and disseminate scientific research in the above mentioned areas.
Meet the team!

Alessio Ciullo
Alessio Ciullo is an applied scientist and consultant with several years of experience in physical climate risk modeling and in developing decision-support frameworks under uncertainty.
He was trained as an Environmental Engineer at Politecnico di Milano and the University of Bologna and he holds a PhD in Policy Analysis from the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft).
After receiving his PhD, he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Bern and as a Senior Researcher at ETH Zurich. Since 2023, he has been working as the Head of Climate Risk Analytics at CLIMADA Technologies, an ETH Zurich spin-off offering scalable climate analytics. In this role, he leads climate risk projects across various industry sectors.

Henrique Moreno Dumont Goulart
Dr. Henrique Goulart uses climate science to help communities handle real-world problems now and in the future, with a special focus on hydrological risks like floods and droughts. Henrique’s present work as a researcher and advisor in climate adaptation focuses on projects with partners and clients around the globe to integrate climate sciences and societal impacts. He translates complex scientific data into targeted risk assessments by using and combining a range of advanced models, from physical climate and hydrodynamic models to data-driven and machine learning methods. His ultimate goal is to give communities and leaders the information they need to efficiently and effectively adapt and become more resilient.
