Nature-based and community-led solutions stand out as promising pathways for both disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation. These approaches integrate ecological and social systems, drawing on local knowledge and natural processes to build resilience
A key rationale of this working group is to advance inter- and trans-disciplinary research on the effectiveness, scalability, and governance of these strategies. By integrating insights from different disciplines, the group aims to bridge knowledge gaps and support evidence-based decision-making for more resilient and adaptive communities.
Meet the team!

Silvia De Angeli
Silvia De Angeli is a Researcher at the University of Lorraine (France) and Principal Investigator of the project Habi(Li)ter, where she studies the habitability of places affected by climate change and multi-risk conditions through transdisciplinary approaches. She holds a Ph.D. in Understanding and Managing Extremes from IUSS Pavia, with research on multi-hazards in EU-funded projects. She previously worked at CIMA Research Foundation, Stam S.r.l., and from 2020 to 2024 at the University of Genoa as PostDoc and Assistant Professor, teaching and researching on integrative/mixed approaches to multi-risk dynamics and climate change adaptation, natural hazards exposure and vulnerability, and disaster risk management. Since April 2025, she has been the Scientific Officer for the NH10 Multi-Hazards sub-division at the European Geoscience Union.

Nicole van Maanen
Dr. Nicole van Maanen is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, working on multi-(hazard-)risk assessment and management (MYRIAD-EU) and the role of Earth Observation in Disaster Risk Reduction (EO4Multihazards). She holds a Ph.D. in Geography from Humboldt University of Berlin, where her thesis focused on developing scenarios for sectoral adaptive capacity to climate change. Her previous positions include Research Analyst at Climate Analytics, Research Associate at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, and Visiting Researcher at Columbia University. She has contributed as a Contributing Author to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report and published in leading journals such as Nature Climate Change, The Lancet Planetary Health, and Environmental Research Letters.
